Week 3: Top 25 -- TFG

Week two is in the books and the rankings are starting to sort themselves out for this year. We'll see some more churn as last year's data begins to fall to the wayside, and data from this year comes to the fore.

New entries: Texas A&M, USC, Texas, Michigan St..

Dropped out: Miami-FL, Utah, North Carolina St., Notre Dame.

Michigan State made a huge jump from 43rd to 25th thanks to a shutout of Florida-Atlantic, while Texas A&M leaped from 31st to 19th thanks to last Sunday's thumping of SMU. As we mentioned last week, our data is updated on Sunday mornings and don't take into account Sunday or Monday games. This means TFG is seeing results for A&M, SMU, West Virginia, Marshall, Miami, and Maryland for the first time; good news for A&M, bad news for Miami.

The theme of this week appears to be "win big or go down in flames." I'm talking to you, Ohio State, TCU, Virginia Tech, and Nebraska. Uninspired wins against top talent like (64) Toledo, (52) Air Force, (72) East Carolina and (71) Fresno State won't impress the computers. At least Stanford, Alabama, and Florida had the good sense to make an early statement against overmatched competition (sorry, Penn State fans).

Auburn continues its unbelievable run of good luck, salvaging a win against Mississippi State by a few inches. TFG remains decidedly unimpressed with the Tigers, though, but they gain three spots thanks to nosedives by Iowa, Missouri, and Nebraska.

Meanwhile, Florida manages to leapfrog Stanford, Oklahoma, and LSU, even though those three teams managed to improve their power rankings. TFG is a big fan of shutouts, and Florida's stomping of lowly UAB looks better to the computer than the two touchdowns that Stanford's D surrendered to Duke. The computer has yet to render a verdict on this season's edition of these teams, but within three weeks we'll have enough data to being making end-of-year projections for each conference.

Stay tuned.
