Rankings through games of 2011-10-16
This week's top 25 is starting to look more and more like the human polls, as the upper crust of undefeateds start to separate themselves from the pack. When looking at the RBA top 25, it's important to remember how strength is computed: strength = OE^N / (DE^N + OE^N), where OE is offensive efficiency and DE is defensive efficiency. Defensively-minded teams have smaller denominators and, therefore, have higher strengths. (Maybe that's where the "defense wins championships" motto comes from.) This is why (5) Oklahoma sits behind (1) Alabama, (2) LSU, and (4) Stanford. (3) Wisconsin has enough offensive firepower to tolerate a 7th rated defense, whereas the Sooners 7th rated offense can't overcome its 5th rated defense.
New entries: Michigan St., Nebraska.
Dropped out: Pittsburgh, Michigan.
